  1. Two questions: Is there a home run limit? Our umpire warned us that we would have an automatic out if we put another one over the fence. Also, is it an out if the runner doesn’t use the alternate home plate??

  2. Question 1) It has been clarified with the City dept of Parks & Recreation that the 5 Home Run limit is for the Men’s leagues only therefore does not apply to our league.

Question 2) When the runner doesn’t use the alternate home plate IS considered an out in all rule books that use the alternate plate. The actual wording from the Senior Softball USA rulebook is as follows:

    CROSSING OR TOUCHING HOME PLATE/MAT
The runner shall also be called out if he touches or crosses over any portion of the Strike Zone Mat. The ball remains live.

In this situation the Home Plate and the Strike zone mat are one (same for balls and strikes). We should probably add the definition to the Over 40 Supplementary Rules also to make sure it is clear.

  3. Who’s decision was it not to allow infielders to throw the ball
around when the pitcher is taking her warm-up pitches ?

the umpires said they were told this during last night’s first game.

  4. Collen,

During the ground rules the person they were running over the Supplemental Rules by memory as the laminated copy that was to remain at the Park along with the rest of the equipment, but it to be found it last Monday. Both teams at our game agreed to the interpretation (an incorrect interpretation as the rule is published).

    The supplemental rule is:

    D. WARM-UP PITCHES
At the beginning of each half inning, or when a pitcher relieves another, not more than one minute may be used to deliver not more than three warm-up pitches. Play shall be suspended during this time. For excessive warm-up pitches, a pitcher shall be penalized by awarding a ball to the batter for each pitch. This does not apply if the umpire delays the start of play due to substitution, conference, injuries, etc. NOTE: A pitcher returning to pitch in the same half inning will not receive warm-up pitches.

It says nothing about other tosses, infield or outfield. My interpretation on this is if the infield and / or outfield choose to warm up after the first inning, they may do so as long as it doesn’t take longer than the three pitches or one minute that the pitcher is allowed for her warm-up. This is to ensure that the game keeps moving along. Please be sure your team understands this.

It has been suggested that all managers bring a copy of the Supplemental rules to each game to hopefully insure that as we get new umps, the rules will be the same.

    Good Luck on Monday!
